I was asked ’do you miss Fukuoka?’ I had to stop and think about it for a moment. I finally answered 'no, not yet'.
I only moved to Tokyo (and out of Fukuoka) last month so everything is still so new and fresh. I haven't gotten used to my new life yet. Sometimes I forget to remember that I have moved and I start doing things on auto-pilot, without thinking.
For example, the other day this happened. Mornings are always busy. I was trying to hurry and get my daughters ready to go to nursery school. I was worried we might be late. After rushing out the door and hussling to the nursery, something unexpected happened. We were early. Way too early! 30 minutes early. Without every considering what I was doing, I was rushing to leave at the same time as I used to leave in Fukuoka.
I don't have any habits built here in Tokyo yet. All my habits are still based on Fukuoka. In that way, you might say I am still in Fukuoka. At least mentally. That is why I don't miss Fukuoka. At least not yet. I need more time.
Once I am used to my new life here in Tokyo, I will most certainly miss Fukuoka a lot. I have a lot of happy memories in Fukuoka and it will always be a very important place in my life. My daughters were born there and I became a father. I started driving in Japan after I got to Fukuoka. I started teaching English in Fukuoka.
Just like all the other places I have lived, I will always remember Fukuoka and the wonderful people I met there. Hopefully I will have a chance to go back again.
